North Raleigh site kneads the dough of new business

Raleigh residents who love Krispy Kreme doughnuts may soon be able to avoid a long trip to purchase the sweet treat.

A group of developers representing the chain is reported to be in negotiations for a restaurant space on Glenwood Avenue. The restaurant operation will be moving out soon, and the vacant building could be renovated and reopened as a Krispy Kreme location.

At present, the Taverna Agora Greek restaurant has the space, which is at 6101 Glenwood Avenue. Lou Moshakos, a restaurateur from Raleigh, is the current owner of Taverna and plans to move the restaurant to a larger space near the Holiday Inn in downtown Raleigh; a round building that is a familiar landmark. He expects to open his new location early in 2015, but no opening date has been set.

Likewise, Krispy Kreme has not revealed a projected opening date for the Glenwood Avenue location. However, the chain is planning to open nine new locations throughout the United States before the end of the year. The doughnut shops, which are based in Winston-Salem, are also going into the international market and there are plans to open 20 stores in Bangladesh before the end of this decade.

Management of the new location could work with a flyer printing company to create handouts for distribution near the store on opening day.
