A local orchestra is planning to perform a classic to usher in the holiday season.
The North Carolina Symphony will perform Handel's “Messiah,” a masterpiece of classical music that has become a favorite of many people, and one that is often performed during the holidays. The work builds to the jubilant “Hallelujah Chorus.”
Grant Llewellyn will conduct the North Carolina Symphony and the North Carolina Master Chorale. Soloists for the evening are bass-baritone Federico De Michelis; tenor Andrew Owens; mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano; and soprano Ellie Dehn.
George Frideric Handel composed his famous oratorio in 1741, it premiered in Dublin, Ireland, in April, 1742. The work has been popular since it first appeared.
The “Messiah” is scheduled for two full performances, the first on December 6 at 8.00 pm, and the second on December 7 at 8.00 pm. The venue is the Meymandi Concert Hall in the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, on East South Street. Attendees will be able to meet the performers at 7:00 pm in the Swalin Lobby/West Pavilion.
A third performance of excerpts from the longer work will be given on Friday, December 6, at noon. A talk before the concert is scheduled for 11.00 am. The orchestra and chorale will both perform, but the soloists will not appear. Banner printing can be used to provide decorations for special events such as this.
