Animazement draws Raleigh crowds despite competing event

Anime fans in the south had a choice to make recently, when two conventions devoted to the art form were held: Animazement in Raleigh and Momocon in Atlanta.

The competition did not appear to hurt Animazement, which has historically been held during the Memorial Day weekend, and which this year drew more than 11,000 attendees. This was a far bigger turnout than last year’s 8,855, and was greater than event organizers had expected. The always-popular dealers’ room did a brisk business, attendees lined up to get into panel discussions, and enthusiasts packed the main events.

One of the most popular events of the convention was the Masquerade, held on the Saturday night. In these events, contestants dress up as their favorite characters from films, anime, television shows, or even Books. Since this was a convention devoted to anime (animated characters, often Japanese), those characters predominated. Winners included a Vocaloid skit (Vocaloid is musical software) that won Best Novice performance. Last Minute Cosplay won Best Master performance with its comedy skit ‘Magikarp’s Revenge’, and End of Forever took Best in Show with its costumes, based on ‘Bioshock’.

Animazement has already announced that it will hold next year’s convention on Memorial Day weekend, 2015. Momocon has moved to the following weekend, eliminating the need for fans to choose between the two.

Organizers could consider working with a banner printing company to create flags to brighten up next year’s event.
