Airport submits new lease to county officials

Raleigh-Durham International Airport, which sports the three-letter designation ‘RDU’, has sent a one-year lease to Wake County Officials. According to an October 15, news item, the airport did not have to renegotiate the lease, since it has the option to renew its lease automatically, through 2025. The lease can be executed by the airport president, without the county board having to sign it.

The new lease RDU has sent is for the land along I-40 that comprises the Lake Crabtree County Park, an area of almost 150 acres. The airport is considering developing the land for use as offices.

The park, as well as the land around it, belongs to the airport, which has been leasing it to Wake County for recreational use. Currently, there are mountain biking trails throughout the area that RDU is considering for development. Such development has been recommended by the Urban Land Institute. In a study carried out this March, it believes the airport should consider converting the land to offices. If the airport develops 98 acres of the 149 available, it would create 1.2 million square feet of office space.

Jim Hartmann, the manager of Wake County, says the commissioners haven't yet signed the lease, but expects discussions to begin if RDU has a serious interest in developing the property.

Airport officials might consider working with a banner printing company to create Banners to advertise the new development.
