Triangle could be home to pro women's soccer team

Although nothing has been finalized, Signs are strong that the pro women's soccer team could soon call the Triangle home. The erstwhile Carolina RailHawks, now known as the North Carolina Football Club (NCFC), would neither confirm nor deny they were considering adding women's soccer to the Triangle, but are apparently watching developments.

Of particular interest is the fact the Western New York Flash, a professional women's soccer team, is reported to have been sold and will relocate to North Carolina before the beginning of the next soccer season. The Flash won the National Women's Soccer League championship in 2016.

The owner of the NCFC, Steve Malik, would like to acquire an expansion franchise of a major-league soccer team, but would also like to add a female team to the mix.

There have been several women's soccer clubs in the Triangle, including one at UNC-Chapel Hill, but there has never been a pro team located here. One league, the Women's United Soccer Association, played in Cary, but failed in 2003.

Despite a hefty fee for expansion, Malik is pursuing his goal. He believes that the continued growth of the Triangle, as well as the increasing popularity of soccer, means the area could support pro teams successfully.
