State approves new paid parental leave

New rules approved by the State Board of Education on Thursday will provide North Carolina public school employees with up to two months of paid parental leave following the birth or adoption of a new child.

This significant change aims to support educators and staff in their parenting journey. It ensures that teaching employees in Raleigh can take a maximum of eight paid weeks off for parental leave following the birth of a baby, and four weeks off if they have recently adopted or become foster parents. The newly implemented temporary rules are yet to undergo a review by the State Rules Review Commission, but the state law nonetheless became official on July 1.

During the State Board's review of the draft rules the previous month, members were informed that parental leave would not apply in cases where children were born before July 1. However, officials said the State Personnel Commission is interpreting the paid leave to include adoptions and foster children placed after July 1, irrespective of the child's birth date. Information like this is often circulated on letters bearing official Letterheads.

Part-time workers also qualify for parental leave under the new rules. A key requirement for the new leave coverage is that school employees must have a minimum of 12 months of continuous service with the same school district to become eligible.
