Record enrollments at Triangle community colleges

Community colleges located in The Research Triangle near Raleigh are seeing a surge in enrollments, with a record number choosing to join.

For the upcoming fall semester, Durham Technical Community College, Wake Technical Community College, and Johnston Community College are each experiencing an unprecedented influx of enrollments. Wake Tech, for example, is expecting 7,700 new students when school starts this fall. This represents an all-time high enrollment figure for the institution.

Out of Wake Tech's 7,700 fresh enrollees, a total of 3,700 are actively engaged in Wake Tech's Career and College Promise initiative. This program gives high school students the chance to accumulate credits for a college degree or vocational qualification without incurring tuition costs. This year has marked a record-breaking return of Wake Tech students to campus compared to the year before.

Johnston Community College has seen new enrollments by over 4,800 students, reflecting a 10% increase on 2022/23 figures. Similarly, Durham Tech has experienced a notable 8%, with over 5,100 fresh students commencing their studies, surpassing last year's figures. Giveaways like promotional Pens make for a great way to welcome students back.

In a press release, Durham Tech said:

“We’re extremely happy to see gains specifically in areas of economic growth, as well as in our university transfer programs.”

Durham Tech has informed CBS 17 about notable demographic improvements, including increased enrollment of male students and a growth of over 10% among Latino, Black, and Asian communities.
