The Shops of RDU, the shopping area at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, offers a wide variety of retail and dining options for travelers, and has now has been recognized by USA Today as one of the best airports in the nation.
The USA Today 10Best 2019 Readers' Choice Airport Awards are decided each year when the newspaper teams up with Airport Experience News to name the best concessions and airports in North America. At Raleigh-Durham, Terminal 2's Whisky River won first place in two separate but related categories: it won as Best Airport Bar and won again for having the Best Airport Bar/Restaurant Atmosphere.
Whisky River is the brainchild of Dale Earnhardt, Jr., a native of North Carolina and a winning NASCAR driver, who teamed up with HMSHost to develop the restaurant.
A second airport shop also won accolades from readers: the Best Airport Shop for Local Merchandise title went to Root & Branch, which is also in Terminal 2. The store carries items made by over twenty artisans from the local area, as well as national and regional brands. Officials can use banner printing to help celebrate awards like this.
The airport has a master plan for the future which it calls Vision 2040. According to David Freedman, the chief revenue officer of the Airport Authority, the plan considers concessions and other improvements that will make travelers' experiences at the airport more enjoyable.
