Animal shelters in Raleigh, Wake County, and across the region held a “Clear the Shelters” event recently, which resulted in 1,041 animals finding their forever homes. Twelve shelters in the Raleigh area waived adoption fees during the event, which was part of a national initiative to help people adopt a pet and “clear the shelters.” All the animals at the SPCA of Wake County, and at the Johnston County Animal Services, were adopted during the day.
Births increase among animals in the spring, with the result that shelters become overcrowded during the summer. People who adopt a dog, cat, or other furry friend during the summer not only bring home a new family member, they also help ease the crowded conditions.
Last year, over 50,000 pets were adopted nationwide during the “Clear the Shelters” effort, and in the Raleigh area, 900 animals found homes.
Agencies participating in the special event, in addition to the Wake County SPCA and Johnston County Animal Services, included SAFE Haven for Cats, the Wake County Animal Center, and the Durham Animal Protection Society.
Even though most shelters didn't open until 10 am, people began lining up as early as 5.45 am to make sure they could find the fuzzy friend of their dreams.
Agencies involved in this type of event could each work with a postcard printing company to create a card announcing the special day, and target the Mailing to their area.
