The Whisker Wars are coming to Raleigh, and men who want to show off their beards and mustaches should ditch their razors for the next couple of weeks.
The first Oak City Beard and Mustache Competition takes place in mid-July. The venue for the contest is Kings, a popular Raleigh club that features live music.
The Triangle Beard and Mustache Club is hosting the event, and welcomes both those who wear beards and the clean shaven who simply admire facial hair. The club is a year old, and felt it was time to start a competition in Raleigh similar to those regularly held in Greensboro and Charlotte, both in North Carolina, as well as other contests in the state of Virginia.
Women are welcome to enter the competition as well. They have to make their own beards and mustaches, so the club has created two categories for them—realistic and fantastic. Some women use hair to make realistic-looking beards, while other women make them from cloth, metal, or other materials.
Proceeds from the event go to the Raleigh Rescue Mission, according to Justin Cox, who is president of the club. He notes that this contest is just the start of the charitable work the club plans to do, and looks forward to making it a vital presence in Raleigh.
The club could work with a poster printing company to create special displays for the event, which takes place on July 19.
