Raleigh’s native pollinators are about to get a boost thanks to a workshop that will craft residences for these busy insects.
While many may be familiar with honeybees, there are more than 400 native North Carolina species that are also important pollinators. JC Raulston Arboretum will be offering a workshop that will craft “bee hotels” using an assortment of natural materials, and these may encourage a colony to take up residence.
The session, which is being hosted as part of Pollinator Week, will be split into two parts. The first will explore the world of native bees including the threats they face and what they need to survive and thrive. The second part will be dedicated to learning how to construct a bee hotel.
All materials needed will be covered by the registration fee, which has been set at $50, and free parking will be available on site for the activity. Karen DiDonato will be the event’s facilitator.
Many people have become interested in environmental advocacy and sustainability, and attending an in-person workshop can help point the way. Copies of handout for a workshop can be ordered from area Print shops.
This opportunity to invite native bees into the home garden will be taking place on Monday, June 16. The session will open at 6:30 pm at 4415 Beryl Road.
