The city of Raleigh recently confirmed it will start construction to improve stormwater handling in the Rose Garden. Currently, the project is in the final stages of permitting and design.
As construction proceeds, a large part of the garden will be closed to the public. This includes areas around the arbor and fountain, as well as the space between the Rose Garden and the Raleigh Little Theatre. However, officials think that it will be possible for most of the rest of the grounds to remain open, including the shelter and amphitheater areas. The area expected to remain open will be accessed either by the Everett Avenue stairs, or via the amphitheater. The closed areas will be indicated by construction fences and signage.
Work is necessary because of the Rose Garden's location in a depression. This makes it prone to flooding with stormwater, which affects the health of both the roses and the other plants, in addition to making the site difficult to use. To address these difficulties, the design of the main part of the garden is an bioretention area that will absorb or redirect runoff. The new retention area will fit in the landscape as it exists now, and plants within the area will be a mix of low shrubs, flowering perennials that will attract pollinators, and ornamental grasses. Brochure printing can be used to create pamphlets that show projects like this when they are complete.
The project should wrap up early in Spring 2020.
