The first pay-what-you-can restaurant in Raleigh is planning to expand, taking over a neighboring space on West Hargett Street.
A Place at the Table has served over 9,000 meals since it opened its doors early in 2018. Maggie Kane, the founder of the restaurant and its executive director, said the expansion will give the restaurant a professional kitchen, as well as more seating indoors and out, which will enable them to realize their full potential as an organization that serves Raleigh's citizens in need.
At present, only breakfast and lunch are served, a pattern that will continue. However, the number of items on the menu will increase, and the space itself will be offered as a venue for community and fundraising events that are held in the evenings.
In addition, expanding the restaurant will enable Kane and her crew to create more jobs, and additional opportunities to train people for jobs in the industry. It will also have more room for people who want to volunteer. At present, as many as 50 people volunteer daily.
There are five ways patrons can pay:
They can pay as much as they can afford; or
Make a suggested donation; or
Pay what they would pay ordinarily, and make a donation as well; or
Pay for a full meal for someone else; or
Pay with their time as a volunteer.
