German supermarket Aldi recently announced its plans to open four more stores in and around Raleigh.
Aldi has been in business since 1913, when the first store opened in Essen, Germany. From that beginning, the chain has grown to have locations in 20 nations, and more than 10,000 stores.
According to Aldi's website, the company is making its U.S. headquarters in Batavia, Illinois, and opened its first store in the United States in 1976, in Iowa. There are now over 1,900 locations up and running in 36 states, with a workforce that totals more than 25,000 people.
Shoppers planning to visit Aldi should bring Bags with them and pack their own groceries, since Aldi does not provide Bags of any kind. The stores will not accept a manufacturer's coupon, and rents its shopping carts. Patrons will have to pay a quarter to get a cart from a machine. The money is returned when the cart is brought back. Finally, although Aldi will not take a check, the store accepts EBT cards, debit and credit cards, and cash.
