Former mayoral candidates compete for council seats

Candidates are currently vying for seats on the Raleigh City Council, and two of them were once mayoral candidates.

Anne Franklin campaigned for the mayoral seat in 1993, and Zainab Baloch made an attempt in 2019.

Franklin held a seat on the council for five years from 1987 until 1993 but was unable to win the mayoral seat, coming in third in a race that was won by Tom Fetzer. She has now filed to take up on the council’s two seats that are up for grabs. Incumbent Jonathon Melton intends to be re-elected to one seat, while Nicole Stewart, the other incumbent, has decided not to run for another term. Flyer printing is often used during electoral campaigns.

When speaking about her desire to get back on the city council, Franklin said to Raleigh News & Observer:

“I’ve had good relationships with staff. I’ve worked with a variety of elected people and institutions in the community. And I just feel that some confidence has been lost in the local government at the moment, and I’m not willing to let that stand.”

Zainab Baloch is a community organizer and activist. She ran for a seat back in 2017 and finished fourth in the mayoral race of 2019. She now wishes to be elected to the seat for District B, which covers a large portion of northeast Raleigh. David Cox, the incumbent, has chosen not to run for re-election in this district.
