Detroit coming to Raleigh

Detroit is on the way to Raleigh with the distinctive Motown sound.

The North Carolina Symphony has an upcoming concert they call “Dancing in the Street: The Music of Motown.” Motown came out of Detroit in the 1960s, and gave America some of its most memorable hits, such as “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye; “My Girl” by the Temptations”; and dozens more.

Bands and vocalists popular at the time included not only Gaye, and The Temptations, but also Diana Ross, The Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas, Lionel Richie, and Stevie Wonder. Between 1960 and 1969, 79 records that made it to the top ten spots in the Billboard Hot 100 list were on the Motown label.

The upcoming concert has Wesley Schulz on the podium, with Syndee Winters, Chester Gregory, and Bernard Holcomb as the guest vocalists. Winters has appeared on Broadway, where she has played Nala in “The Lion King,” and has many film and television credits. Gregory is another seasoned Broadway performer whose credits include “Hairspray,” “Tarzan,” and “Cry-Baby,” and several touring companies. Holcomb, an operatic tenor, has appeared in Verdi's “Rigoletto,” the Gershwins' “Porgy and Bess,” and also appeared in “Dancing in the Street” in Dallas.

The Motown sound will be heard at 8.00 pm on March 21, at the Meymandi Concert Hall at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts. Poster printing can be used to create publicity for events of this type.
