Charity shops may not be synonymous with high fashion, but a recent Greensboro event looked to change that, and raised money along the way.
Rock the Runway, which took place on March 9, was a fashion show and silent auction with a twist. In a challenge right out of Project Runway, seven fashion designers had to take old clothes and other items donated to the Triad Goodwill stores and repurpose them into new outfits. The competition was hosted by Emmy-winning journalist Tanya Rivera.
Among the more unconventional outfits were a series of dresses fashioned out of recycled paper. Amber Kapas was deemed to have made the best of her "unconventional materials", while in the main competition, Virginia Cole took home the audience choice award, and Jasmine Rhodes claimed the judge's favor. The clothes were made available at the event through both the auction and a pop-up "boutique."
Goodwill made Rock the Runway a gala event, with hors d'ouevres and a cash bar, and tickets running up to $500. All of the proceeds went to benefit Goodwill. Local charity events are often small-scale, using Print advertising techniques like Flyers and poster printing to spread the word, but Rock the Runway may have been a little more exclusive.
North Carolina fashionistas likely enjoyed the event and enjoyed making a difference, with hosts describing the proceedings as "an all-out dance party."
