Greensboro event looks to connect minority-owned businesses

Modern Greensboro, North Carolina is a diverse city, but black- and other minority-owned businesses still face many challenges. For seven years, East Greensboro Now has hosted a career fair intended to make it a little easier, with the 2018 edition scheduled for the end of April.

The seventh annual Gate City Minority Business Opportunity Fair will take place at the Khalif Event Center. The event's main purpose is to encourage these businesses, which often lack access to traditional networks of patronage, to bid for contracts from local government and public institutions.

Business owners who are women and/or belong to a racial minority will want to update their Business Cards and pack their promotional Pens, as representatives of the city of Greensboro, North Carolina A&T State University, UNC Greensboro, Guilford County, and more will be present and looking to do business. Attendees will also receive information about various government programs and grants that could benefit them.

East Greensboro Now is a nonprofit community development corporation created by the municipality in 1998 to oversee the revitalization of the East Market Street Corridor, but whose goals and operations have broadened over the years to include the whole east side of the city. The Fair is part of its mission to increase and strengthen minority business ownership in Greensboro. The group also works to support urban regeneration and affordable housing.

The fair is scheduled for the afternoon of Thursday, April 26.
