The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is offering a series of workshops designed to help women succeed in the workplace.
The Association, in co-operation with the City of Greensboro, has launched the Work Smart initiative. Work Smart is designed to address the wage gap between genders, with women on average earning less than 80% of male pay, by helping women develop both confidence and skills relevant to the workplace.
The February 1 workshop, taking place at the Women's Resource Center in Greensboro, is an example of these efforts. The workshop focuses on salary negotiation skills, offering both instruction and practice. Women will learn how to calculate their financial worth, research the industry, and create a strong but reasonable argument for higher pay. The workshop is designed to help women who are nervous about aggressively negotiating salary to have the same confidence that many of their male colleagues do.
Workshops such as those organized by Work Smart also offer professional women the chance to meet and network. Events such of these provide an opportunity to network, share advice, and exchange Business Cards and Letterheads.
The AAUW is a professional organization founded in 1851 which aims to advance women's status in education and the workplace. The Start Smart initiative stems from their research and lobbying on the gender-based pay gap.
