Columbia festival to talk about tomatoes

To many foodies, there is nothing quite like biting into a freshly picked tomato still warm from the sun, and a Columbia event being held next month will give attendees a chance to enjoy this experience for themselves.

The Jefferson Farm and Garden Extension and Education Center is already prepping for its annual Tomato Festival. It will be all about growing this popular fruit that is often served as a vegetable, and other plants in the Solanaceae family, including tomatillos and peppers, will be in the mix as well.

The function will provide attendees with tips and tricks they can put to use in their own home garden, and farmers and commercial growers may also find the activity to be of interest. The fun will run for three hours, and there will be presentations by top tomato growers to sit in on. Tastings of over 100 varieties are on the agenda so everyone can discover their many flavors.

September will see communities all across the United States host harvest-themed celebrations. Banner printing services for these special occasions will be on offer at a local printer.

This salute to tomatoes and the people who grow them will be held on September 7th. The venue for the Tomato Festival will be located at 4800 East New Haven Road. Admission is free.
