Women welcomed to roller derby 101s

The Lansing Derby Vixens are holding boot camps for women who might like to try skating as part of a roller derby team. All women are welcome, no matter their body type, age, or skill level.

They held one such camp on Sunday, December 4, where participants such as Emma Morris, a nursing student at Michigan State University, came to find out what roller derby was all about. Morris said she had no idea what to expect, but seasoned skaters said a lack of experience was no reason for women not to see if the sport was for them.

Georgia Peterson of Okemos, 49, has been skating with the Vixens for five years. She says she had never played on a team in her life before joining the roller derby. After attending a few games, she become curious, signed up for boot camp to see what it might be like, and never looked back.

There are two more camps scheduled – January 8 and January 15 at the Westside YMCA of Lansing. All camps run from 9:00 – 11:00 am. Women who are serious about joining the league will be offered some basic training, and will have to pass basic skills tests before they will be allowed to compete. The season starts in Spring 2017.
