The East Lansing Public Library is now offering a tutoring program to help elementary school children remain mentally active during the summer, rather having to take time in the fall to get back into the school mindset.
The library is pairing teenage tutors with elementary school children in what is described as a “perfect partnership of education and entertainment”.
According to an article on WLNS.com, one student in the program is Mia, a six-year-old who will be starting first grade at Stepping Stones Montessori School this fall. Mia, whose grandmother enrolled her in the program, says she wants to learn new words before she starts school and is taking part in Junior Scrabble games at the library.
Mia and other children are being tutored by teenage mentors, such as Emma, who is about to turn 14 and is a freshman at East Lansing High School. She was in the program herself several years ago, and is happy to be teaching what she learned from her own mentor. Emma says the program allows kids to communicate and connect creatively while they learn more about the subjects they will be taking in school.
The program is open to members of the public, and is free. Sessions meet for two hours, from 10:00 am to noon, every Tuesday in July.
Library officials could work with a postcard printing company to create a mailer for city residents, making sure they know about the program.
