An event is scheduled in Lansing that will brighten up the winter months.
The MSU Broad Art Lab is planning a Zoom class that will show people how to design and build their own luminary. Luminaries, which are often called luminaria, are traditionally made of paper Bags with patterns cut in the paper, and a candle inside. The candle shines through the holes, creating a design. They are often placed in multiples and used to line sidewalks.
The luminaries planned by the lab will be made of clay. Participants will carve shapes in the clay slabs, using images of winter found in the collection of artworks in the MSU Broad as their inspiration. Once they are carved, the slabs will be joined to form the luminary, which can be used to hold either an LED light or a candle. The clay will be left to dry overnight, and then participants will be instructed as to how they can finish their luminaries with a metallic sheen. Flyer printing can be used to create instruction sheets for events like this.
The materials for making the luminaries are part of the cost of the class, and participants will be able to pick them up curbside at the Art Lab, starting next Tuesday, December 1, between 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
Classes are scheduled on December 6, from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm, and December 16, from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm.
