Thousands of people took to the Lansing streets on Saturday, July 9, for the city's fourth Color Run.
These events are held throughout the world and, according to the organization's website, were started in March 2011 to bring communities together and promote happiness and health.
The idea is simple: during a 5K run, participants have colored powders thrown on them over and over again, until they are covered with a rainbow of colors. This year's course wound around Lansing’s downtown, going from the capitol to Adado Riverfront Park. Although there are no figures available for this year's attendance as yet, in 2015, about 8,000 people took part.
First-time runner Betty Gauthier, a Lansing resident, said to the Lansing State Journal that the event was a good way to begin running regularly, and that it encouraged her to keep up the activity. For Kira Dean of East Lansing, the fun was a little different—she got to throw green and blue powers on the runners, getting almost as much on herself as she did them. She participated in the event after hearing the run needed volunteers.
Over the years since its inception, Color Run has given over $4m to charity. In 2015, there were approximately 225 runs in over 35 countries.
