New stadium nears completion at local high school

For years, the football team of Lansing Catholic High School has been forced to play its home games on other fields. In a few days this will no longer be the case, since a new stadium on the school's campus is nearing completion—just in time for the opening game of the season.

The project, which cost $2.5 million, will seat 2,100. Workers are currently installing stands on the home side, striping the track, and finishing the press box. Electrical work and sound equipment should be installed soon.

In addition, the stadium will provide a home for the school’s lacrosse, cross country, track and field, and soccer teams. The playing surface is synthetic turf, and will also be used for Junior Cougars programs.

Tom Maloney, the president of the school, said many people in the city are excited by the new stadium. The school has a long history, but there has never been a game played on the campus on a Friday night. Alumni who were graduated in the 1960s and the 1970s are excited, and the athletes are eager to try out the new facility.

The first game in the new stadium will be the season-opener August 26, 2016, against Waverly.
