New project should improve gateway to South Lansing

The Bill Snethkamp auto dealership on South Pennsylvania Avenue is expanding, and investing $4.8m in the endeavor – a move that seems to have gained widespread approval.

Lansing officials have begun calling the expansion the ‘South Lansing Gateway Project’, and believe it will improve the South Pennsylvania Avenue corridor near the on-ramp to Interstate 96.

President and CEO of the Lansing Economic Area Partnership, Bob Trezise, noted that the interchange brings a lot of people from across the state into the city, and he is happy the area is being improved. The project includes building a new dealership, which will be sited across the street from its original location.

The site comprises 2.2 acres, and construction should be finished by spring of 2016. A service center may be completed by 2017. The new dealership will bring 40 jobs to the city. In addition, according to Snethkamp, it will improve the appearance of the area.

Two other acres at the site will be marked for commercial use, such as a hotel. In addition, a sign welcoming visitors to Lansing will be built near the on-ramp to the freeway.

City officials might help keep people informed by creating Brochures describing the site and the opportunities it offers to commercial developers, and making the information available to commercial realtors in the Lansing area.
