Lansing city officials signed an agreement on November 5 that starts the development of the Red Cedar Renaissance project.
Virg Bernero, mayor of Lansing, believes the project will help develop the Michigan Avenue corridor further, by adding retailers, a hotel, and housing for both students and non-students. The city will split the costs of improving the public infrastructure with the city, an amount estimated to be $76m.
The development is on the site of the former Red Cedar Golf Course, and is designed for mixed use. Mayor Bernero called it a “world-class global village” that he believes will change the corridor dramatically. In addition to retailers and apartments, the development will include restaurants and a 20-acre park with a river flowing through it. Underground parking will be available, along with pedestrian walkways to the campus, Frandor shopping center, and the River Trail.
Since the project sits in a floodplain, the $76m amount will be used to prep the site for further work. It is also expected that some $200m in private investment will flow into the project. Developers are likely to be excited about the water feature, since they also plan to clean the river as they work on the park.
City officials could work with brochure printers to create Booklets to mail to commercial and residential realtors, describing the new property and the opportunities it presents for their clients.
