Motoring giant hiring in Lansing

General Motors is already taking on new employees for its Lansing Grand River Assembly plant.

The company has added a third shift in order to keep up with the demand for the latest-model Camaro, and will be hiring more than 500 employees in the near future.

United Auto Workers Local 652 represents the plant's workers, and the union's president, Mike Green, is delighted with the news. He calls it “huge for us”, explaining that this will be “the first time the plant has been fully utilized” since it was built.

The new employees are being hired “off the street”, according to plant manager Mike Trevorrow. This means they are brand new to the company, and were neither transferred from a different GM plant, nor were they previously released from their contracts by the company.

When it is fully staffed, there will be approximately 2,300 people working at the facility. The third shift is expected to go into operation some time during the second quarter of 2016.

Trevorrow said the Camaro is still an “icon” for enthusiasts of sports cars, and the demand is such that the plant makes about 230 Camaros every shift. The Camaro was named Motor Trend's Car of the Year for 2016.

General Motors could create custom Pens with the Camaro name and logo to give to the new employees as they start work at the plant.
