Lansing's Sparrow Hospital begins renovations

Sparrow Hospital has begun a renovation that will almost double its capacity to handle inpatients who are at the institution for rehabilitation.

The upgrade, which is slated to take place at the hospital's main Lansing location, will cost about $7m. It is being done as a joint venture in partnership with Grand Rapids' Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, and could be complete as early as January 2016, at which time Sparrow will increase its capacity from 24 to 40 beds for private patients. The unit will be named ‘Mary Free Bed at Sparrow’, and will have two therapy gyms included.

Sparrow decided to expand its unit after a series of studies showed the hospital was able to service only about half those who need inpatient rehabilitation. Since the rehab unit at Sparrow is almost always full, patients who are recovering from illnesses or injuries are sometimes treated at nursing homes. These studies recommended that Sparrow have anywhere from 38 to 44 beds available, and the hospital, in agreement with Mary Free Bed, decided on 40.

The renovation could mean new jobs; it is projected that the hospital may hire as many as 28 new employees to join the 70 who current work in rehab.

The hospital could work with a banner printing company to create a welcome banner for the new unit to celebrate its opening.
