A local zoo has been honored for using its community programs to promote diversity.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) recently honored Lansing's Potter Park Zoo for its work in promoting diversity. In particular, the association singled out the facility's Zoo in Your Neighborhood program for praise. Graphic design can be used to add such accomplishments to official publications used in facilities like this.
The Zoo has paired up with more than 35 local partners to provide people in the Greater Lansing area with education programming at no cost to them. It also has zoo passes available that people can check out, in the same way they can check out library Books. They and their families can then use their pass to enter the zoo free of charge.
The Potter Park Zoological Society's executive director, Amy Morris-Hall, said the Zoo in Your Neighborhood program is typical of the zoo's mission to encourage enthusiasm for the natural world, and animal conservation, by providing passes and free programs to people who might not otherwise have the means to visit.
The award also recognized that Potter Park Zoo is the one facility, of the 236 institutions that the AZA accredits, that has created the most significant innovation in its programming. Mariah Martinez, the zoo's community engagement coordinator, says one of the facility's top priorities is to make sure it is inclusive and accessible to everyone.
