Lansing workshop to teach blacksmithing

Next month, Lansing Makers Network will hold the Intermediate Blacksmithing: Forged Hand workshop to help more experienced blacksmithing students hone their skills.

Lansing Makers Network is a nonprofit organization that provides a safe environment for creatives, makers, and artists to get together to share ideas, tools, techniques, and experiences. The network connects people to several different creative groups in the greater Lansing area.

The Forged Hand workshop is designed for people with intermediate blacksmithing skills, such as those who have had prior blacksmithing classes or equivalent experience. The four-hour class will go over how to turn a one-inch by one-eighth-inch steel bar into a hand-shaped sculpture. Students will learn how to hot cut, fill, and use tools to create textural details. Some examples of what students can create include bottle openers, back scratchers, and object holders.

Organizers request that participants wear work boots or any shoes that are made from leather or canvas. Safety glasses will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own.

Workshops often rely on printed teaching materials, such as Brochures, that can be handed out to students. Such materials can be printed by visiting area shops specializing in brochure printing.

The Intermediate Blacksmithing: Forged Hand workshop is scheduled for August 13 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Lansing Makers Network is located on 2730 Alpha Access Drive. Tickets start at $75.
