Several organizations in Lansing are encouranging residents to remain active throughout the winter.
The effort is known as the “winter warm-up”, and is set up to address the tendency for people to become inactive at this time of year due to the chilly weather.
According to Kathy Hollister, who is with the Capital Area Health Alliance, there are many resources in the region that can help people stay active. People in the mid-Michigan area can choose from more than 50 events to help them keep moving, from belly dancing to walking. Other health-related activities include having people keep track of their blood pressure.
Blue Cross’s B.J. Puchala says that January is the perfect time for residents to support one another in their efforts to continue exercising, since everyone is trying to keep up their New Year’s resolutions. In addition, it has been shown repeatedly that people who exercise with others are more successful than those who try to stick to an exercise regimen on their own.
The winter warm-up includes a challenge to residents of Lansing and the surrounding area, who have been tasked with walking 250,000 miles together. Andre Hutson, who played basketball at Michigan State and went on to play professionally, is one of those challenging residents to walk this winter.
