Lansing first responders train for emergencies

When an emergency situation unfolds, first responders have to act quickly, and there is no time to decide what to do on the spot. To prepare for this type of scenario, personnel from the Tri-County Fire Department and the Lansing Police Department participated in a training day recently.

Kevin Schlagel, a sergeant with the Lansing police, said the training was geared toward perfecting plans that are already in place at both agencies. He added that every agency always has a plan in place, but the training helped to make sure it was efficient.

Training included what would happen if there were a number of casualties from a shooting, with students playing the part of the victims. First responders practiced finding them, determining who needed help first, and then treating their injures.

Brad Drury, assistant chief of the Delhi Township Fire Department, said that any time a large operation is undertaken, issues occur. Most of the time, the problems lie in communications, since trying to coordinate between police, fire, and other responders is difficult. Emergencies are chaotic, so everything has to happen correctly from the beginning, which is precisely why the training day was held.

Training like this is valuable, so officials might work with a flyer printing company to create a handout summarizing the information taught and the learnings people can take away.
