Lansing's City Hall building is 50 years old, and the city's outgoing mayor, Virg Bernero, believes it is time to find the city's offices a new home.
Bernero requested developers present ideas for revamping the site, and the public recently got their first look at the proposals.
Four developers presented plans: Lansing's Karp and Associates, LLC; Urban Systems LLC/WestPac Communities (an Okemos firm); Lansing's Boji Group, LLC; and Beitler Real Estate Services (from Chicago).
Details of the plans are still scarce, but one calls for renovating the building and turning it into a hotel. Two other plans would renovate the structure and, in addition, build a tower on City Hall Plaza. The two proposed towers would be different heights, and both plans include hotels.
The fourth proposal suggests razing the building to the ground and replacing it with a mixed-use structure 13 stories in height. Here, too, a hotel is proposed.
Mayor Bernero will receive a final recommendation by September's end, from a team of city experts that will review the plans. CBRE|Martin, a commercial real estate company, plus members of panel of experts from the fields of construction management, economic development, real estate, law, and finance, are assisting the review team.
Projects such as this, which have the potential to impact many people, can excel if officials work with a newsletter printing company, which can create a letter that keeps people updated on progress.
