Artist Brian Whitfield, the man behind the Michigan state specialty license plate, has been commissioned to create a mural
According to an August 4, 2015 news article, the Lansing Economic Area Partnership placed an order for the artwork, which will decorate the US-127 underpass where it goes under Michigan Avenue, near the Frandor Shopping Center. New lighting will be installed, and there will be four new murals in total.
Whitfield grew up in Lansing and was graduated from Sexton High School. He went to college in Grand Rapids, where he attended the Kendall College of Art & Design, and received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art, located in Baltimore.
For 20 years, Whitfield has worked as a graphic artist with the Michigan Department of Transportation, where he designed the 2012 Mackinac Bridge license plate, which won a national award. After hours, he's created Posters for BluesFest and JazzFest, and some of his work is displayed at Lansing Community College.
For the mural, Whitfield intends to pay homage to the auto industry on one side of the underpass, a work that will feature the Lansing skyline and depict Lansing's communities. On the other side, the artist envisions a mural that depicts the way in which education opens up the world.
City officials could work with brochure printers to create a small booklet for visitors and residents that describe the murals and their meaning.
