Eel farm proposed near Lansing

A company based in Florida is considering building an eel farm near Lansing. The $30 million project would be located in St. Johns, in an industrial park, according to an article on the WILX Channel 10 website.

The idea is the brainchild of Aqua Vida Aquaculture whose founder, Kit Munday, says two types of eels would be raised at the facility - American eel and African longfin eel. Munday describes the eels, which can be roasted, stewed, or grilled, as fish that provide “high quality protein.” There would be about 25 jobs created at the farm, which could cover as much as two acres.

Stephen Hussey works for the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development as the poultry and aquaculture program manager. He says the planned farm would be the first commercial facility in Michigan to raise eel for human consumption. He also notes that Aqua Vida will have to obtain a research permit for aquaculture before it can go ahead with its plans. Products like this are unfamiliar to many people, so officials might like to work with brochure printing to create informative Booklets.

Eel is found on the menu much more often in Asia and Europe than it is in North America, but interest in this fish is growing. Aqua Vida uses sustainable methods and environmentally-friendly, certified practices in farming its eel. They form partnerships to pursue research into ways to conserve the various species.
