The Media Arts Academy of Kalamazoo and the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership at Kalamazoo College are working together to host free sneak previews and discussions of films that will be aired on the weekly “Independent Lens” series of PBS.
According to the executive director of the Arcus Center, Mia Henry, these films will focus on the history and context of issues that involve a struggle for social justice. The screenings on Kalamazoo will include dinner and then will be followed by youth participants from the Media Arts Academy and event co-sponsors leading a discussion on the issues of the film.
The first film will be “Autism in Love” by Matt Fuller which is a first-person portrayal of four adults at different places on the spectrum of autism who discuss their personal lives as they are involved in romantic and dating relationships and shows how they find love in spite of their challenges with autism.
There will be three other films shown during the 2015-2016 academic year. These will include “In Football We Trust” by Erika Cohn and Tony Vainuku; “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution” by Stanley Nelson; and “Peace Officer” by Brad Barber and Scott Christopherson.
The film, “Autism in Love”, will be shown at 5:30 p.m. at the Center on Wednesday November 11. Flyer printing companies may be able to help the Center with printing Flyers about the series to promote interest within the community.
