The remains of this culture can be viewed at a mound in Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo. European settlement
The first Europeans were mostly fur traders, who worked in the region in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The county's first non-Native settler was Bazel Harrison, who built a home near a small lake. Others quickly followed, with the result that more than 100 families were in the area by 1830.

Much of the Kalamazoo area was agricultural, and the rich soil drew farmers from New England and upstate New York. This second-generation of Kalamazoo residents started a number of factories, with the result that industry has always since been an important factor in the city's growth.
In 1886, Dr. William Erastus Upjohn started a Kalamazoo company called Upjohn Pill and Granule Company, which later became Pharmacia & Upjohn. It's now known as Pfizer, and is one of the largest pharmaceutical concerns in the world. The founding of this enterprise marks the start of Kalamazoo's affiliation with the pharmaceutical industry, and also led to an increase in the city's population, as the new industry and others that began at that time made Kalamazoo a desirable place to live and work. Growth of the city
