One of Michigan’s largest-running cultural groups, the St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit, will be holding its 177th Highland Games in the Commerce Township area this summer.
The Games feature a number of traditional Scottish sports and competitions. These include heavy athletic competitions like caber-tossing and stone-throwing, and two teams duking it out in the classic tug of war. There will also be competitions in Celtic cultural arts such as highland dance and pipe band. Athletes can represent their Scottish clan in competition or in the Parade of Clans that kicks off the event.
In addition to competitions, the Games will be a cultural celebration with a party atmosphere. Entertainment will include national and regional artists in a variety of Celtic styles. Visitors can also find out about their own Scottish heritage at the Clan Cultural Centre and Genealogy Tent, while young highlanders can have fun in the Wee Bairns children’s area.
The Highland Games will also include special Whisky Tasting sessions on Saturday afternoon, which are usually a hot ticket. There will also be over 20 vendors in a marketplace area that includes Scottish and other food, Celtic crafts, merchandise and collectables. Cultural events like this often use flyer printing and social media to attract interested people from nearby areas like Commerce Township.
The 2026 St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit Highland Games are set for July 31 and August 1 at Greenmead Historical Park in Livonia, Michigan.
