Toys needed for children in Saco area

Saco Toys for Tots is looking for new, unwrapped toys and monetary donations this holiday season.

Known as Northern County Toys for, Tots which serves communities along the coast from Old Orchard Beach to the Kennebunks, it has so far reached half of it budget of $20,000. A coordinator for the annual event, Leo Menard, said that the organization will inventory the toys it has, and then use the monetary donations to purchase the remaining needed toys.

He added that this year there are about 135 teenagers who have signed up to receive toys, as compared to last year’s 80, and this is an area in which donations are needed the most. He said that items most appropriate for this age group include watches and jewelry, educational games, makeup and hair accessories, and sporting goods. Printed lists of such needs can be fulfilled by local Print shops.

Both cash and toys are accepted through the holiday season but before the holiday is when the items are distributed. After the holiday, Saco Toys for Tots will shop for more toys to fill up their inventory for next year. The maximum that people can spend on toys is $30, but Menard said that after the holidays it is often possible to find more expensive toys at reduced prices and therefore be able to maintain the spending limit.
