A team of Saco Middle School (SMS) students is the state winner in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest.
These students from the seventh grade will now advance to the national competition. News of such achievements is often made known throughout the community with poster printing.
The team has created marker Pens that are 100% sustainable, biodegradable, and refillable. For their project, the students received a prize of $12,000, a video kit to help them highlight the impact of their project for the national competition, and an employee mentor from Samsung. Led by their teacher, Lindsay Girard, a Math and Extended Academics English Language Arts teacher at SMS, this project is looking to address the impact on the environment of the 400 million markers thrown out every year in landfills throughout the United States.
The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest is a US-wide competition that challenges students in grades 6 through 12 to use their skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to address issues in the real world and bring about positive social change. Girard said the team is looking forward to representing Maine and appreciates the support from Samsung.
The top 10 national finalists will be selected by Tuesday, March 26. The top three national winners will be selected by community choice voting and announced on Monday, April 29.
