The historic Pepperell Park in Saco may undergo a remodeling in the near future.
The directors of the town’s Parks and Recreation Department, Ryan Sommer, gave a presentation to the Saco City Council, along with Todd Richardson, a landscape architect, on the potential plans for renovation.
The remodel would remove the John Fairfield Elementary School. This school will no longer be needed once the construction of the two new elementary schools in Saco is completed. Richardson said that the park is centrally located in town, so it is easily accessible by both pedestrians and vehicles.
The renovations to the park would include a picnic area, a pond with a fountain and a perimeter walkway, a playground with equipment for children of all capabilities and ages, an amphitheater, and gathering spaces. In addition, the entrance of the park would be moved to Beach Street and offer multiple entrances for pedestrians around the perimeter of the park. There would be two parking lots, one at the main entrance and another near School Street.
With positive reactions from the City Council, Sommer is now looking to form a committee to create the final design of the park and look for funding opportunities. Poster printing can be used throughout a town promoting such redevelopments and asking for assistance in such efforts.
