A grant of $22,000 was given to the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) of Saco by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission earlier this year to provide new educational resources for the community.
The Saco Community History Project will be funded by the Certified Local Government Grant. The project is a self-guided walking tour that features the landmarks in downtown Saco and on Saco Island. There will be close to two dozen Signs that will be installed, each of which tells the history of Saco through stories about important people, events, and buildings.
Residents of Saco are being asked by the HPC to share their stories as the full history of the community can only be told by members of the community with special connections to the past. Stories about an important business, residents who may have historic homes, and stories about someone who made a significant contribution to the history of the town, for example, are welcome. Local Print shops can help spread the word about making such contributions with Flyers and other printed materials.
Resources will be offered by the Dyer Library to help the Saco HPC in putting together the stories of Saco. Signs downtown and on the island will be installed by the Saco Public Works Department.
The grant application was written by the assistant planner for Saco and HPC Staff Liaison, Shannon Chisholm.
