Saco develops plans to reduce traffic congestion
Officials from the state of Maine and the city of Saco have created a short-term plan to relieve traffic congestion along Route 122.
Their recommendation calls for building a new connector road. It is expected that the road will cost $5 million and will link traffic between routes 5 and 112. In addition, at the intersection with Jenkins Road, a traffic signal and dedicated left turn lane on Route 112 should be installed. It is recommended that a traffic signal also be installed at the intersection of Franklin Street and Route 112.
More long-term recommendations focus on modifying the Exit 36 turnpike interchange, where there is a great deal of congestion, so that from Route 112 there is full north and south access to the turnpike from Route 112. There should also be a new intersection west of the turnpike. New traffic signals would be needed at both locations.
A consultant for the city, Carol Morris, said that this plan will reduce the congestion during rush hour on Industrial Park Road and Route 112 and reduce traffic that tries to cut through the neighborhoods of Saco. Often residents rely on printing services to provide printed materials with more detailed information about such plans and their effects on their travels.
A meeting will take place in September or October of the Saco Traffic Safety Committee to discuss the recommendations from the study.
