The new Saco River Drinking Water Treatment Facility is currently under construction in Biddeford, and will be replacing the current 19th-Century facility.
Once completed, it will serve the communities of Old Orchard Beach, Saco, and Biddeford in Southern Maine, and the Pine Point area of Scarborough.
The new facility is across the street from the existing facility. The project will preserve over 250 acres of forest land and will nurture valuable wetland habitat, protect the Saco River source, and provide the community with access to over 250 acres of forest land.
In addition, the drinking water facility of Maine Water will be able to be moved out of the flood plain of the Saco River, which will eliminate any disruptions from flooding. More details about such facilities are often distributed throughout local communities with flyer printing.
President of Maine Water, Rick Knowlton, said that the new facility will greatly improve the water infrastructure of Southern Maine. He added that although the current facility meets all the water quality and safety guidelines of the state and federal governments, it is one of the oldest such facilities in the country, since it dates back to 1884. The new facility, he went on to say, will be a good investment not only from a public health perspective, but from a financial one as well.
The new facility is expected to become operational in 2022.
