Library site chosen in Frederick's west end
County Executive Jessica Fitzwater has announced the selection of a site for a new public library in the west end of Frederick.
The chosen location will be at Hillcrest Park, currently under-used, situated at the intersection of Butterfly Lane and McCain Drive.
Fitzwater commented:
She noted that this is fractionally further from Butterfly Ridge Elementary School than was anticipated, but was closer to both Hillcrest and Waverly Elementary.
Designed to cater to the diverse neighborhoods in the vicinity, the library's strategic placement near these elementary schools and two prized parks ensures safe and convenient walking distances. The vision behind this library is to transform it into a central hub for a comprehensive community campus, providing various services for Frederick's west side. Graphic design can be used to present what a project will look like when completed.
Mayor Michael O'Connor revealed that the city had initially contemplated building the library at Westside Regional Park. Due to certain parts of the park being developed with funds from the Program Open Space initiative, this option was reconsidered. Instead, the decision to utilize the land at Hillcrest Park presents a remarkable opportunity for the city to revitalize an under-utilized park and establish a gathering place for the community, according to the Mayor.

“Building the library here on the site currently Hillcrest Park places the library between two of the three school sites in this area.”
