Veteran folk-rock band coming to Bethesda
They are beloved by fans of several generations, and now they're coming to Bethesda.
The band America will be at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda this summer, for one performance only.
America got together in London in 1970, although its founding members, Gerry Beckley, Dan Peek, and Dewey Bunnell were all Americans. They were Air Force “brats,” with fathers stationed in England.
Their hits include “Ventura Highway,” “A Horse with No Name,” and “Muskrat Love.” Their sound is often described as folk-rock, and their album “America's Greatest Hits” went multi-platinum in both the United States and Australia.
America won a Grammy in 1972 as Best New Musical Artist, and in addition to their own material, they also often cover songs originally performed by artists such as the Gin Blossoms, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan.
Reviews pay tribute to the length of America's career, as well as to the current performance. One said:

“The concert was exceptional. The band has not missed a lick in 42 years . . .”

“They are just as good as when I first saw them in 1976 . . . Their voices never seem to change, and in addition to all of their popular hits, they sang less popular songs from their albums, which I loved.”
