Legendary musical group celebrated in Bethesda

A documentary film is scheduled to be shown in Bethesda, giving viewers an inside look at one of the musical world’s most popular groups.

David Harrington, a violinist, founded the Kronos Quartet in Seattle. The group, which has had a variety of members over the years, gave its first concert in 1973, and is now based in San Francisco. The quartet plays many different musical genres, such as contemporary classical music, and over 900 works have been composed specifically for the group. Now, a documentary has been created that traces their career.

“A Thousand Thoughts” was written and directed by Joe Bini and Sam Green. The film combines storytelling, history, image, and sound, and the accompaniment to the film is provided by the Kronos Quartet themselves, playing live.

The film depicts the history of the quartet and its status as one of music world’s leading lights using archival footage and personal interviews. Among those sharing their insights are Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and composer Philip Glass.

During the event, the quartet will revisit some of its works, playing music by Aleksandra Vrebalov, John Zorn, Laurie Anderson, and George Crumb. Green will narrate the film in real time.

The Los Angeles Times calls the film:

"As magical an amalgamation as anything you can imagine."

The film, and the Kronos Quartet, will appear at the Strathmore in Bethesda on April 21. When events like this are scheduled, organizers can use poster printing to create striking advertising.
