Jazz great to appear in Bethesda
One of the biggest names in jazz is coming to Bethesda.
In an evening certain to be a delight for lovers of the genre, Wynton Marsalis will perform at the Music Center at Strathmore, along with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
Marsalis is one of a family of musicians and, fittingly, was born in New Orleans. Ellis Marsalis, Jr., his father, was a music teacher and pianist. His siblings include his older brother Branford, and younger brothers Delfeayo and Jason. All four are noted jazz musicians.
He first planned to be a classical musician, and studied at the famed Julliard School, but did not receive a degree. After touring Europe in 1980 with the Art Blakey big band, he switched to jazz and made his first recording with Blakey, then toured with Herbie Hancock.
Marsalis came into the limelight in 1987, when he helped create the Classical Jazz summer concert series, held at Lincoln Center. The series was so successful that Jazz at Lincoln Center became an official department of the Center, then finally an independent entity.
