Classical music to be aired in Bethesda
An upcoming concert in North Bethesda will feature two works that might be labeled “classical,” despite the fact that they are relatively modern.
The National Philharmonic will be performing the popular “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, and the “Fifth Symphony” by Adolphus Hailstork.
Hailstork is a contemporary composer who has an impressive body of work that includes compositions for orchestra, solo instruments, chorus and orchestra, and the chamber ensemble. He has also composed three operas. Hailstork, who is African American, draws inspiration from American, European, and African traditions. He is a multi-instrumentalist and teacher who holds a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and was granted his PhD in composition in 1971 by Michigan State University.
“Carmina Burana” opens with the “O Fortuna” movement, which will be instantly familiar to almost everyone since it has been used in film (“Excalibur”) and even television commercials (Domino’s Pizza). Composed between 1935 and 1936, “Carmina Burana” is based on Medieval Latin texts.
The National Philharmonic uses music to unite, inspire, and engage diverse communities throughout the area. The group’s values celebrate education, innovation, inspiration, creativity, and access and inclusion. It was established in 1985.
The concert is set for June 4 at 3:00 pm at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda. Tickets are on sale now. Organizers of events like this can use brochure printing to create programs for the audience, listing the works to be performed and their composers.
